“The Veldt”
In the short story “The Veldt”, Ray Bradbury shows us that technology can be hurtful to children because children can become too
dependent on it. For instance, in two children Wendy and Peter are in a futuristic home where the home takes care of all their needs. The
children become dependent on their home to do all their chores, cooking and even bathing. The children in the house begin to meltdown
when the George the father decides to turn off the house. Peter doesn’t know how to survive. Peters exclaims, “Would I have to tie my own
shoes instead of letting the show tier do it? And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath?” (Bradbury). This quote shows
how Peter is so self reliant on the house to do everyday things like tie his own shoes. The children have become so dependent on technology
they have forgotten how to take care of themselves.
